After a power interruption, scheduled wi-fi coffee makers can lose critical settings, independent tests and hardware manuals indicate

23 October 2026

Independent test results and user manuals from several coffee maker manufacturers reveal how connected appliances behave after a power disruption — and the findings are not encouraging. Multiple sources confirm that many smart coffee makers lose saved settings, including brew schedules and clock times, when the power goes out. For some models, this requires a full reset and reprogramming of settings; for others, only the brew clock resets. Several prominent brands have no built-in memory or battery backup to retain settings during an outage.

What the tests and manuals show

Multiple manufacturer user manuals state that many devices lose vital settings when unplugged or without power. The Capresso Coffee Team PRO manual warns, "When the power is interrupted or turned off, all data from chapters 7.1 and 7.2 [which describe the brew timer and smart settings] are lost, and the Auto-On brew will not activate at the programmed time when power is restored." Keurig's guidance was similarly direct, stating that after a power interruption, the machine's clock "may reset to 12:00 and the brewer may need manual reprogramming of the clock and scheduled brew time."

Other manufacturers also acknowledge the clock and settings loss issue. Tefal Coffee Connect's manual warned that program settings are only saved when the phone and brewer are both online — any setting changes made without an active connection are lost. Nespresso's premium Vertuo Creatista manual explained how a full factory reset clears pre-programmed volumes, water hardness, milk temperature, and milk texture settings, and can reset Bluetooth/Wi-Fi pairing while triggering a visual reset indicator.

Why this matters

These problems might initially appear to be minor inconveniences. The coffee will still brew, and rescheduling a brew time seems a small price for smart functionality. However, the issues can become more significant for several reasons.

First, many users already face connectivity challenges. Testing of Keurig's top-end K-Supreme SMART model recorded six Wi-Fi disconnections over a 45-day period. Restoring the connection required manual intervention: while described as a "minor annoyance," brewing wouldn't resume until the owner noticed the error, unplugged the unit for 60 seconds, and reconnected. Considering many consumers don't discover their brewer's reset settings after an outage, the inconvenience compounds.
